FACT: You can do basic Italian conversations ok, but when it comes to those deeper and more detailed conversations that engage and connect, your brain freezes mid-conversation and you can’t find the words.
You get frustrated, nervous and…sometimes, you feel a bit embarrassed!
Because, you’ve probably spent hours learning new vocabulary and grammar on apps or courses, and so you wonder: “Why can I understand something well but when it’s my turn to respond, it’s like…I haven’t learned any Italian at all??”
At some point, you’ve probably thought “I should just move to Italy…” after all, it’s much easier to learn Italian when you’re surrounded by Italian, right?
It’s true, full immersion does help.
But I’ve also met many people who moved to Italy they still couldn’t speak Italian, despite having lived for years there (and some of them have become my students which I’ve had the honour to help!).
And here’s why full immersion wasn’t still working for them:
Only when you combine immersion with the right mindset and with consistent speaking practice you…become a confident Italian speaker.
Because, of course you need to learn the language, but you also need these three things:
1.Immersion through integration: meaning you being in touch with the Italian language as possible by integrating it into your life — so that your brain get used to it. You can start doing this right now (without waiting to be in Italy!)… that’s what I call “italianizing your life”.
2.Speaking practice: speak in Italian –not just read and/or listen to it! Speaking is a skills on its own that need to be developed. Take every opportunity to speak or create opportunities to speak as much as possible.
3.Elevated mindset: work on your beliefs and perceptions to overcome perfectionism, fear of making mistakes, fear of other people’s judgements and all the unhelpful thoughts that are on repeat in your brain every time you try to have a conversation in Italian.
You need all these three area to become a fluent Italian speaker that feels at ease when having any conversations. And those are the three main pillars of my own unique method “Live Italian”. 🙂
So, my question to you is this: is there a particular pillars you feel you need to develop more at the moment? What can you do today to start developing this area?
Let me know in the comments,
